Mbalula, the Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), asserted
the party's unwavering focus on its election campaign, despite acknowledging
former President Jacob Zuma as an 'irritation.' Speaking to the media after the
national executive committee meeting and lekgotla, Mbalula emphasized the ANC's
commitment to being accountable to the people and avoiding Zuma becoming the
centerpiece of their election manifesto.
Jacob Zuma is an ‘irritation’ but ANC won’t be distracted – Mbalula
Addressing
Zuma's recent statements, Mbalula acknowledged that while the former president
has made various remarks, some bordering on tribalism and chauvinism, the ANC
had a responsibility to call him to order when he was still a member. Now, with
Zuma openly expressing such views, Mbalula labeled him as an 'irritation' and
cited his 'short memory.'
Regarding
the newly formed MK Party's use of ANC colors and slogans, Mbalula condemned it
as 'daylight robbery and looting of ANC assets,' vowing that the party would
not allow such appropriation.
Mbalula
also expressed concern over Zuma's prominent role in the MK Party since its
launch on December 16, 2023. Despite Zuma's declaration that he would no longer
vote for the ANC of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC suspended Zuma on
January 29, 2023, citing his actions as actively impugning the integrity of the
ANC
.
In the face of these distractions, Mbalula affirmed the ANC's commitment to its
election campaign and urged the party to remain focused on its
responsibilities, steering clear of Zuma's controversial posturing and the
challenges posed by the MK Party's use of ANC
Democratic Principles Internal elections uphold democratic principles within political parties. Just as countries hold regular elections to ensure representation and accountability, parties should do the same internally. This ensures that decisions are not concentrated in the hands of a few individuals, promoting inclusivity and fairness.
Regular elections provide a mechanism for holding party leaders accountable for their actions and decisions. If party members are dissatisfied with the direction or performance of their leaders, they can express their concerns through the electoral process.
Internal elections promote transparency and fairness in decision-making processes. Members have the opportunity to voice their opinions, participate in the selection of party leaders, and influence the party's agenda.
This transparency builds trust among party members. Elections encourage active participation from party members. Knowing that their votes matter and can influence the party's direction, members are more likely to engage in party activities, contribute ideas, and work towards the party's goals.
Internal elections help reflect the diversity of opinions within a party. Different factions or ideological groups within the party can compete for leadership positions, ensuring that a range of perspectives is considered in decision-making. A party that regularly conducts fair and transparent internal elections gains legitimacy and credibility. This, in turn, enhances the party's image in the eyes of the public and can attract more support from voters who value democratic practices.
Elections provide an opportunity for parties to adapt to changing circumstances and renew their leadership. New leaders can bring fresh ideas and approaches, ensuring that the party remains relevant and responsive to evolving political landscapes. Without regular elections, there is a risk of power becoming concentrated in the hands of a few individuals or a particular faction within the party. Regular elections act as a check against the accumulation of power and prevent the entrenchment of a ruling elite. Internal elections promote intra-party democracy, allowing members to actively participate in decision-making processes. This not only strengthens the democratic culture within the party but also sets an example for how the party would govern if in power.
Ultimately, internal elections ensure that the leadership and direction of the party reflect the will of its members. This is essential for maintaining the party's relevance, unity, and effectiveness in the pursuit of its goals.
